DIY Radiant Barrier Installation Tips
Purchasing Info
- Check to make sure what you’re buying is perforated, this is necessary to avoid water condensation.
- If your attic doesn’t have some form of ventilation, radiant barrier insulation may not help and will collect condensation.
- Check the emissivity level of the radiant barrier, it should be .1 or below to be classified as a true radiant barrier.
Installation
- If installing yourself, start in the morning when attic is coolest.
- Install away from the attic entry point and work in.
- Works best to staple radiant barrier foil to rafters in the attic.
- Can be installed in the rafters or floor joints of the attic.
- Pre-cutting foil to a pre-determined size will cut down on frustration rolling out the attic foil.
- If using the spray foam, it would be wise to wear a mask while installing
Maintenance
- Once radiant barrier foil gets covered in dust they become almost useless. You’ll have to find some way to clean the foil or replace it down the line.
